Jetstream2 is a free on-demand cloud computing resource service led by Indiana University and available through ACCESS allocations. The power of HPC (High-Performance Computing) is available to more people by making it easy to create and run pre-configured virtual machines which are accessed via terminal commands or browser windows. Other capabilities, such as Globus Transfer, are also available. This powerful resource is available to researchers and scientists; refer to their website for additional information (see links below).

Getting started, you will need to create or log into your ACCESS account. This can easily be done from the Jetstream2 landing page (see links below). After logging in, you request resources based upon your project size. The requirements for different allocations range from fairly simple for an EXPLORE project, to more involved for a MAXIMIZE project. Once you’ve been granted permission you then create virtual machines (VMs) that can do everything from running RStudio to hosting always-on websites. These VMs may also have additional software loaded and other configuration done to them by a System Administrator to have them conform to your needs.

Our group has used Jetstream2 to achieve various goals:

  • Train researchers on how to update a database we’ve put together for them
  • Make speed comparisons between compute systems for processing drone-captured data
  • Verify machine learning algorithms, which ran much faster on Jetstream2 than the current large machine
  • Run large language models on publications’ text from rangelands research
  • Create a reproducible computing environment for an R package with challenging dependencies
  • Using geospatial datasets to model carbon storage that require a large amount of compute

If you are at the University of Arizona and are interested in using Jetstream 2 for your work, please reach out to us! We look forward to helping you with your projects!
